The number of confirmed cases of coronavirus infection in the world over the past seven days has increased by 4.3 million against 4.1 million a week earlier.
The incidence has risen to the level of mid-May 2021, but if in the spring it grew mainly in South America, now it is in the North and some Asian countries. At the same time, in Europe, the next outbreak was generally localized.
Mortality remains at a high level – almost 69 thousand patients died during the week, 6 thousand more than in the previous seven days. For three weeks in a row, at least 60 thousand deaths have been registered globally, although in June and the first half of July – less than 50 thousand.
Free News has collected key statistics of the epidemic in recent days.
The new wave in North America
The situation in North America has deteriorated sharply in recent weeks. In the United States, where less than 20 thousand cases of infection per day were registered a month ago, now 120 thousand are detected. In addition, the death rate has also increased significantly in the country: during the week, the number of registered deaths increased from 0.4 thousand to 0.7 thousand per day.
In Mexico, the incidence has jumped tenfold since the beginning of summer, up to 20 thousand cases per day. Although not so rapidly, it is growing in Canada, where 2.1 thousand infections were recorded on Tuesday – the maximum since May.
The outbreak in Asia
Another outbreak of coronavirus infection has spread to many countries in Asia. So, about 35 thousand cases are registered daily in Iran, and on Wednesday, the authorities of the republic reported about 39.4 thousand cases, which was the maximum indicator for the entire pandemic.
In neighboring Turkey, the number of confirmed cases has exceeded 20 thousand per day for a week. The last time the incidence in the country was so high was in early May. It is also at its maximum since the beginning of the spread of infection in Iraq – about 13 thousand infected people are detected there every day.
The epidemic continues on the other side of the continent, for example, in Malaysia and Bangladesh. At the same time, a new wave is gradually declining in Indonesia: if in mid – July 50 thousand cases were registered there per day, then in the first week of August-35 thousand.
However, Indonesia remains in the first place in terms of mortality – about 1.7 thousand sick people die there every day. In countries where the incidence peaked, the number of deaths also increased – up to 0.4 thousand per day in Iran and 0.3 thousand in Bangladesh and Malaysia.
Stabilization in Europe
In most European countries, the situation as a whole has been stabilized due to new restrictive measures and an increase in the rate of vaccination.
In the UK, compared with the middle of July, the incidence has almost halved, in the Netherlands – by about 4.5 times.
In other countries, the new measures have not yet led to a decline but have reduced the rate of infection spread. In France, the number of detected cases in mid-July stabilized at around 20-25 thousand per day, although it tripled in the first days of the month.
At the same time, despite the next wave of the epidemic, mortality in Europe can be kept at a minimum level.
