Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has said that his country will offer political asylum to Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, whose trial is taking place in the UK.
The judge of the Central Criminal Court of London, Vanessa Baraitser, previously refused to extradite Assange to the United States due to concerns for his health. Representatives of the American side confirmed that they would appeal against the decision of the London court.
The Mexican leader welcomed the decision of the British judges, calling it a triumph of justice.
“I will ask the Foreign Minister to prepare the relevant documents to ask the UK for the possibility of releasing Senor Assange, who will be granted political asylum by Mexico,” Obrador said at a press conference.
