Mexican President Andres Manuel López Obrador on Friday reacted cautiously the possibility of the White House closing the southern border of the United States, saying that this is an “internal matter” of the United States.
“We have not expressed our opinion on this issue, because it is an internal matter of the US government, and we prefer to abstain from comments,” López Obrador said at a daily press conference. “We always strive to maintain very good relations with the United States,” he added.
Earlier on Friday, the US President Donald Trump announced the possibility of a complete closure of the border, if Congress does not approve the financing of the construction of the border wall. “We are building a wall or … we are closing the southern border”, he tweeted.
To put pressure on lawmakers, the White House head provoked a partial shutdown of the Federal government last Saturday.
D. Trump needs $ 5 billion for the construction of the wall, the construction of which was the main promise of his presidential campaign. Democrats agreed to allocate $ 1.3 billion to strengthen border security, but have long been opposed to the construction of the border wall.
