The Nobel Prize in medicine was awarded for the study of hepatitis C

This year’s Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine was awarded to scientists Harvey Alter, Michael Houghton, and Charles Rice for their research on hepatitis C.

“For the first time in history, the hepatitis C virus can now be cured. The discoveries of the award winners in the field of medicine revealed the cause of the remaining cases of chronic hepatitis and made it possible to conduct blood tests and use new drugs that saved millions of lives,” said representatives of the Nobel Committee.

The traditional annual Nobel week started in Stockholm with a ceremony to announce the winners in physiology or medicine. On Tuesday, the names of the Nobel laureates in physics will be announced, and on Wednesday— in chemistry. On Thursday, the winners of the literature prize will be announced on Friday — the peace prize, and on Monday, October 12 — the Alfred Nobel memorial prize in Economics.
