The Netherlands refused to call itself Holland

The Dutch authorities decided to abandon the name Holland. The Guardian reported.

This decision was outlined as part of the country’s image update. The authorities believe that all Holland is associated with drugs and the Red light district.

It is noted that the Netherlands wants to present itself as “developers of advanced technologies to solve global problems.” In addition, the government plans to increase the tourist attractiveness of other cities besides Amsterdam.

According to the publication, the name of the Netherlands will be actively used in 2020 during the Olympics in Tokyo and the song contest “Eurovision-2020”.

In February, Amsterdam mayor Femke Halsema called for reform of the famous Red light district. She said that turning prostitution into a tourist attraction was humiliating and unacceptable. According to Halsema, the flow of tourists makes it difficult for prostitutes to work in the area and endangers their safety. She added that Amsterdam’s tradition of the open sex industry is increasingly linked to the humiliation of women by travelers.
