The first full meeting of the presidents of Ukraine and the United States on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York began with jokes.
Zelensky said at the beginning of the open part of the conversation with Donald Trump that in modern realities, “it is better to be on television than on the phone” than to laugh at the journalists present.
– I think that all of you read the transcript. I’m sorry, but I don’t want to run in the American election. I think it was a good phone call, normal. We talked about many things, and I think that no one pressed me, ” Zelensky commented on the transcript of the July phone conversation with trump released today by the White House.
The President also invited his American counterpart to Ukraine. He noted that Barack Obama “did not find the time” for this visit.
“Well, I’ll try,” Trump said.
He also remembered that once he owned the contest “Miss Universe” and it was won by a Ukrainian woman (perhaps he was referring to Alexandra Nikolaenko, who reached the final of the competition in 2001). Trump called Ukraine a country with “huge potential,” to which Zelensky said: “I know this because I’m from this country.”
Before the meeting, the President of Ukraine said that the priority is to fight corruption, restore the territorial integrity of Ukraine and end the war in the East of the country. Zelensky said that Ukraine earned the anti-corruption Court.
Trump, in turn, recalled that Russia annexed Crimea during the administration of US President Barack Obama. The President praised Zelensky’s desire to defeat corruption in Ukraine. Trump also reminded Zelensky that the US began supplying lethal weapons to Ukraine. The American President at the same time reproached Obama for the fact that his administration was not engaged in military assistance to Kyiv.
Trump also expressed hope that the leaders of Russia and Ukraine will be able to meet and discuss the problems. According to the US President, such negotiations could be a huge achievement.
Zelensky also stressed that he wants to stay out of American politics. Kyiv, according to the Ukrainian leader, does not intend to interfere in the domestic policy of the United States.
Zelensky stressed that he came to the United States, not for help but support.
