US President Joe Biden was prepared for a meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin in Geneva by CIA Director William Burns, who advocates a return to containing Moscow, as in the Cold War, Time reports.
The meeting between Putin and Biden is scheduled for June 16.
According to the publication, citing three representatives of the US administration, most of Biden’s preparation took place during the daily intelligence briefing. The leading figure was the director of the CIA, the former US Ambassador to Moscow, Burns.
“Wherever (Putin) goes, he must meet resistance,” the newspaper quoted the official as saying.
The publication also claims that the goal of the United States is for Putin to leave the meeting with the words: “The Americans are plotting something against us.”
At the same time, as the newspaper notes, although Biden plans to “talk tough” in Geneva, his goal is to ease tensions and provide predictability for both sides.
