The main differences between the heroes of the new “Dune” from the original

Will Denis Villeneuve’s new film surpass David Lynch’s success by reimagining the genre?

The science fiction novel “Dune” by American writer Frank Herbert was voted the best book of 1965. Some book lovers call this work the best representative of the genre of its kind.

The film adaptation of the incredible world of the planet Arrakis, where the main plot action takes place, was only a matter of time. In 1984, cult director David Lynch took on the film based on the book.

However, critics have dubbed his work “damned.” In their opinion, the whole idea and message of Herbert is simply impossible to convey visually. However, in the 21st century, Canadian director Denis Villeneuve took up this difficult task.

Villeneuve said that “Dune” will become for him the main film work of his entire life. He does not plan to dwell on only one part of the film and intends to turn the project into a whole cinematic universe.

According to the original plot, the novel takes place in 10 191 AD. The planets are ruled by various house-dynasties, like the families of Lords from “Game of Thrones” based on the works of George Martin.

People of the future have spent several years in an unequal war with a raging artificial intelligence, so the world of “Dune” has rather primitive technologies, and there are no supercomputers we are used to.

Instead, there are so-called mentats – these are people who have developed their minds to the level of a machine. In addition to them, there are also navigators – mutants who control spaceships.

Of course, all this became possible only thanks to a special substance – spice. It replaces food, fuel, medicine, but it can only be obtained on a huge desert planet – Arrakis.

Two powerful factions are trying to establish their control over the planet – House Harkonnen and House Atreides. The former are harsh and ruthless, while the latter are fair and strong.

The leader of the House of Harkonnen in the 1984 film was played by British actor Kenneth McMillan, who received the title of Sir from Elizabeth II herself for his contribution to cinema. However, at the age of 62, the actor died due to a seizure.

Now his place has been taken by the Swede Stellan Skarsgard, known for the films “Beowulf” and “The Avengers”. His main rival will be Oscar Isaac, who will lead House Atreides. Previously, his role was played by Jurgen Prokhnov.

The son of Duke Atreides will be played by 25-year-old Timothy Chalamet, in Lynch the role of this character was played by Kyle McLachen. Rebecca Ferguson will appear in the ampoule of his mother, instead of Francesca Anis, and Zendaya will become a wife instead of Sean Young.

The role of their closest comrade-in-arms, as well as the master of weapons, was given to Jason Momoa. Before him, this hero was Richard Jordan, who died of a tumor at the age of 56.

Another key character for the Atreides house was Josh Brolin, who replaced Patrick Stewart, the star of the X-Men films, in this place.

The leader of the local inhabitants of the planet Arrakis will be played by the Spanish actor Javier Bardem, known for the latest Pirates of the Caribbean. Before him, Everett McGill acted in the ampoule of this hero.
