A Thai army soldier on Saturday killed at least 20 and injured more than 30 visitors to the Terminal 21 shopping center in the northeastern city of Nakhon Ratchasima. The attacker took refuge inside the Mall, taking hostages.
A local police official told that the soldier first killed another soldier and a woman, wounding another person. Thomma became enraged over a dispute related to the division of land.
Police named the suspect. It is reported that the Sergeant Jakapanth Thomma opened fire. The first shots from automatic weapons were fired inside the shopping center at about 15: 30 local time.
Security forces stormed the Mall early Sunday morning and helped evacuate hundreds of people.
“We don’t know why he did it. Looks like he went crazy,” said a Reuters Kongcheep Tantrawanit, the official representative of the Ministry of Defense of Thailand. According to Kongcheep, killed at least 20 people. In addition, the shooter took several people hostage – the exact number is still unknown.
According to the Ministry of Health of Thailand, at least 31 people were injured, 10 of them are in critical condition.
Local publications published a video showing a soldier getting out of a car located in front of a shopping center and shooting at people who are trying to find shelter.
During the attack, the suspect posted a message on his Facebook page, writing: “Death is inevitable for everyone,” and then asking his followers: “Should I give up?” Facebook administrators have already deleted the suspect’s account.
According to local media, the suspect’s mother was taken to the shopping center to try to convince her son to surrender to the authorities. In a video posted on social media, a woman repeats in tears: “Why did he do this?” getting into a police car.
The suspect opened fire in a residential building, killing two people, and then went to a military base. There, he took the weapons from the vault and wounded several people.
