The number of people infected with coronavirus in the world in July was about a third higher than in June – 15.4 million against 11.2 million
If the epicenter of the pandemic was Latin America at the beginning of the summer, now the infection is spreading fastest in Europe. The incidence has also begun to grow sharply in North America and Asia.
At the same time, the mortality rate, which has been growing for several months, on the contrary, has decreased by almost a third, approximately to the level of last November.
Free News has collected key statistics of the pandemic over the past month.
The incidence in July began to grow, including in those countries that already occupy the first places in the world in terms of the number of infected people. This may indicate the beginning of the next wave of the pandemic.
So, in the United States, the number of confirmed cases increased 10 times in a month at once – from 10 thousand to more than 100 thousand per day. In neighboring Mexico, at the end of July, almost three times more cases were detected than in June.
The situation has also worsened in Western Europe: in France, the incidence has increased almost tenfold, in Italy – seven times, in Spain – five times, in the UK – three times. In the United Kingdom, the peak occurred in the middle of the month: 55 thousand cases were confirmed there per day, and now – about 30 thousand.
A new epidemic rise is also being recorded throughout Asia – from Turkey, where four times more infected people were detected compared to the beginning of July, to Japan, which updates the maximum number of infected people every day at the height of the Olympics. Other affected countries include Iran and Indonesia, where the incidence has increased by about 3.5 times.
Stabilization and decline
In South America, which was the main focus of the pandemic in June, the rate of infection spread has sharply decreased. In Brazil, about 40% fewer cases were registered in July than a month earlier (about 1.1 million against 1.9 million), in Argentina – by almost 60%, in Colombia – by 70%.
The situation in Africa is also improving. In South Africa, the number of detected cases has decreased by about half compared to the peak indicators of the beginning of July.
In July, in the world, despite the next rise in the incidence, about 265 thousand deaths were registered due to a new infection, compared to 382 thousand in June. This is partly because new outbreaks occur in countries with high vaccination coverage.
Most deaths are still recorded in Brazil – more than 1 thousand per day. However, this is significantly less than in June, when the indicator was 1.8 thousand.
In Argentina and Colombia, after the peaks of the previous month, the mortality rate also fell sharply – by 50% and 60%, respectively.
Among Latin American countries, as in the case of morbidity, Mexico was an exception: in July, almost 30% more deaths were registered there than in June.
The maximum death rate reached in Russia. Over the past month, more than 23 thousand patients died there, which is almost 10 thousand higher than the June figure and by 6 thousand – the previous maximum recorded last December.
