The head of the European Commission warned of the threat of a third wave of coronavirus

Too early cancellation of quarantine measures re-introduced in EU countries carries the risk of a third wave of COVID-19 spread in the winter, said the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, speaking at the plenary session of the European Parliament.

She said the EU needed to learn from the summer’s easing and avoid making the same mistakes.

“Too early easing (of restrictive measures) is a risk of a third wave after Christmas,” she said.

In most EU countries, Christmas falls at the end of December.

Earlier, the EC head noted that the European Union might have lifted serious restrictive measures too soon after the first wave of COVID-19. Simultaneously, during the first “knockdown” in the spring, restrictions against coronavirus were generally more stringent than they are now.
