Russia and the United States are not negotiating to exchange American Paul Whelan, who was convicted of espionage, for Russians imprisoned in American prisons. These rumors were commented on by the official representative of the foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova.
“Rumors about alleged discussions with the American side of some likely schemes to exchange Whelan for our citizens do not correspond to reality,” she said.
On June 15, the Moscow city court sentenced US citizen Paul Whelan to 16 years in a maximum-security prison, after finding him guilty of espionage. His lawyer Vladimir Zherebenkov on the same day, told about the possibility of an exchange for Konstantin Yaroshenko or Viktor bout, prisoners in American prisons.
