The first BMW electric crossover was the Chinese-made iX3

This week for the automakers will be active and eventful – the prime minister of all kinds will be enough for the eyes. Tomorrow, there will be screenings of new products from Mercedes and Maserati, Ford, meanwhile, has returned the forgotten name Bronco for its new frame SUV, and now BMW has shown itself an important car – it’s the iX3 electric crossover.

In fact, we are talking about the X3 transferred to electric traction, the current generation of which was introduced in 2017. Despite this, the Bavarians were in no hurry with the introduction of the electric SUV to the market – the main competitors appeared on sale earlier: for example, the Audi E-Tron made its debut at the end of 2018, and the Mercedes EQC arrived in time next year.

BMW iX3 Engine

The electric version differs from the original X3 primarily in plastic plugs instead of a radiator grill (although the branded “nostrils” have not gone away), the absence of exhaust pipes, decorative inserts of blue color and 19-inch wheels with a special design that help to reduce the drag coefficient (it equal to 0.29).

In the “base” of the crossover – digital instruments, panoramic glass roof, three-zone climate control, cruise control, parking sensors, and adaptive suspension, and for a surcharge, a projection display, leather sports seats, Harman Kardon audio system, a rear-view camera and 20- inch wheels. The luggage compartment of the iX3 varies from 510 liters to 1,560 liters with the rear row folded (for the regular X3, 550-1600 liters).

An electric motor mounted on the rear axle on the iX3 develops 286 hp. and 400 Nm of torque. The battery block weighing 518 kg uses 188 prismatic lithium-ion cells, the capacity is 80 kWh, (the actual used volume is 74 kWh).

One passport charge should be enough for 460 km of the WLTP cycle, while acceleration to 100 km/h in a crossover weighing 2185 kg takes 6.8 seconds, the maximum speed is limited to around 180 km/h. Recharging the battery energy by 80% of the “accelerated” DC terminal with a power of 150 kW will take 34 minutes.

Serial production of the iX3 will be launched in China at the facilities of the BMW Brilliance JV, from where the machines will be exported to other countries. At European dealers, the novelty will appear at the beginning of next year, in Germany prices will start from 69,800 euros.
