The fire extinguishing system on the US Navy landing ship, which is burning for the second day at the San Diego naval base, was disabled, rear Admiral Philip Sobek told reporters on Monday.
“The system didn’t work because the ship is in the dock,” he said.
Fox News broadcasts his communication with the press.
According to him, now the priority is to extinguish the fire, the damage assessment and clarification of the causes of the incident will begin later. When destroying, the primary attention is paid to preventing the light from reaching the fuel tanks, the rear Admiral added.
The fire occurred on Sunday. The ship was undergoing maintenance, with about 160 sailors on board at the time of the fire. The US naval surface forces command reported that 17 sailors and four civilians were injured in the fire.
