The delta coronavirus strain will become dominant in many countries of the world at the next stage of the spread of COVID-19, says Feng Zijian, a researcher at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
“It is quite possible (that the delta coronavirus strain will become the main one in the world). In particular, the increased contagiousness and infectivity of this strain contributes to the survival of the virus and its spread, therefore, at the next stage, the degree of its spread may become more and more,” Feng Zijian said on the Central Television of the People’s Republic of China.
In his opinion, “the delta strain is likely to become the dominant strain in the next stage of the spread of the pandemic in more countries and regions around the world.”
A variant of the coronavirus B. 1.617 was first identified in India in October 2020, and later three subspecies of it were discovered – B. 1.617.1, B. 1.617.2 (“delta”), and B.1.617.3, differing in several mutations in the spike protein and prevalence in different countries. The delta strain has recently been found in many countries and, according to Indian doctors, could be the main cause of the second wave of coronavirus in India.
