BRUSSELS – The European Union will analyze the possible economic and other impacts of the ban imposed by the US authorities on visits of EU citizens, a representative of the European Commission said at a briefing in Brussels.
“We recently received this document. We have already said that the American side did not agree on this step and did not warn about it. Therefore, we are now reading the text and will analyze this situation and its possible impact in the coming days,” the EC representative said.
The EC added that so far there have been no contacts with the American side to clarify the decision. “We are sure that there will be such contacts, and they will explain the logic of the decision,” the European Commission stressed.
US President Donald Trump announced that the US would ban entry from Europe for 30 days from March 13, except for the UK, as the European Union did not respond enough to the spreading coronavirus. The decision does not apply to persons who have the status of permanent legal residence in the United States, the next of kin of US citizens, and certain other persons.
The World Health Organization declared the outbreak of the new COVID-19 coronavirus a pandemic on March 11. About 120,000 people in more than 100 countries have been infected in the world.most of them have recovered, but more than 4,000 have died.
