The EU called the negotiations on Turkey’s accession to the EU a historic mistake

The European Union (EU) should stop negotiations on accepting Turkey, which has become a historic mistake, said Manfred Weber, head of the EU’s largest supranational political party, the conservative European people’s party (EPP).

“The negotiations on Turkey’s admission turned out to be a historic mistake that caused only frustration in Turkey and did not bring the country closer to the EU. We must stop negotiations on Turkey’s accession to the EU and develop a new legal basis for our relations with this country,” Weber said.

In March, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said that the EU should speed up the process of Turkey’s accession to the community.

Meanwhile, in October last year, the President of the European Parliament, David Sassoli, said that the EU should suspend negotiations on Turkey’s accession to the Union because of Ankara’s military operation in Syria.
