The drug against Ebola to be tested for treatment of coronavirus

The US biotech company said it is working with Chinese authorities to determine whether the antiviral drug remdesivir can provide effective treatment for patients infected with the rapidly spreading coronavirus, known as COVID-19.

The company hopes to find out by May 1.

Representatives of the biopharmaceutical company Gilead Sciences, which created the drug remdesivir as a treatment for Ebola and other diseases, told that the company has already started two clinical trials among infected patients “to determine the safety and effectiveness of remdesivir as a potential treatment for coronavirus.”

Information about the tests was met with hope in China. Concerned about the coronavirus outbreak, Chinese residents say that the four syllables of “remdesivir” sound like the phrase in Chinese: “The hopes of the people.”
