The former defender of the Netherlands national football team and Ajax Amsterdam Wim Suurbier has died at the age of 75, according to the club’s website.
Ajax was shocked on Sunday by the news of the death of former player Wim Suurbier,” the statement said.
Suurbier played more than 500 games for Ajax from 1964 to 1977, became a seven-time national champion, and a three-time winner of the European Champions Cup (now the Champions League). At the club level, he also played for Schalke in Germany, Metz in France, and several teams from the United States. Suurbier played 60 games for the Netherlands national team, scored three goals, won silver medals twice at the World Championships (1974, 1978), and won a bronze medal at the European championship-1976.
