The Department of State has promised not to charge for tickets for evacuation flights from Afghanistan

The Hill newspaper noted that, according to one of the points of the country’s legislation, the Department of State should demand reimbursement of expenses for charter American evacuation flights.

The U.S. authorities do not intend to charge for tickets for evacuation flights from Afghanistan, although American legislation provides for such a requirement. This was reported by the head of the press service of the Department of State, Ned Price.

In these unique circumstances, we have no intention of demanding reimbursement from those who flee Afghanistan,” he said.

According to The Hill newspaper, according to one of the points of the country’s legislation, the Department of State must demand reimbursement of expenses for charter American evacuation flights. “The law requires that Americans or foreign citizens agree to pay the cost of evacuation, which is usually comparable to the price of an economy class air ticket or the cost of a trip by another mode of transport to a specified destination,” the publication explains.

In turn, the newspaper Politico previously reported that despite the claims of U.S. officials that flights from Kabul will be free, one of the evacuees told the publication that Department of State employees demanded payments of up to $2 thousand from passengers who are U.S. citizens and even larger amounts from foreigners. As noted by Politico, in response to a request for comment on this information, the Department of State referred to the mentioned law without directly denying the fact that the evacuation is carried out on a reimbursable basis. “The situation is extremely volatile; we are working to overcome the obstacles that may arise,” added the Department of State official, who was not named.
