The Chinese Foreign Ministry commented on the closure of the US Consulate General in Chengdu

China’s demands to close the US Consulate General in Chengdu are a legitimate and necessary response, and responsibility for the situation lies entirely with Washington, according to a statement on the Chinese Foreign Ministry’s website.

Earlier, the US demanded that China close the Consulate General in Houston. The Chinese Foreign Ministry called the decision a political provocation and said it would take retaliatory actions. US State Department spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus noted that Washington had ordered the closure of the Chinese Consulate General in Houston to ensure the protection of intellectual property and personal information of Americans.

“These measures by the Chinese side (requirement to close the Consulate General of USA in Chengdu) are a legitimate and necessary response to unreasonable acts of the States. They correspond to international law, basic norms of international relations and diplomatic practice,” – said in a statement.

It is emphasized that China would not like to see such a situation in relations between Beijing and Washington, which has emerged at the moment, “the responsibility lies entirely with the United States.”

“We once again call on the US to reverse the corresponding erroneous decision and create the necessary conditions for the normalization of bilateral interstate relations,” the Chinese Foreign Ministry added.
