The cause of the fire in Notre Dame named

The cause of the fire in the Cathedral were problems with electricity. This writes the newspaper Le Parisien with reference to the CSIs working at a scene.

The source of the fire was located at the base of the spire, on which the restoration work was carried out. Experts are not yet ready to clarify what exactly the problem is. All options are considered – from a short circuit to a wiring fault. The version of deliberate arson is excluded.

The fire chief said that a fire started due to the fact they hadn’t been summoned immediately. More than 20 minutes the Cathedral staff tried to find and eliminate the cause of the fire alarm. They turned to specialists only when the fire engulfed the upper part of the building.

As noted by the Secretary of state of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of France Laurent Nunez, the fate of the Cathedral hung in the balance. If the fire allowed the fall of 13-ton bell, it would lead to the collapse of both towers, and then the whole building. In this case, Notre Dame would no longer be subject to restoration.

The damage caused by fire and water cannot yet be assessed. Experts will be able to visit the site only when it is considered safe.
