The American F-35 “will destroy” the Russian “Zircon”

The fifth-generation F-35 Lightning II fighter jet will be able to act as an “extended pair of eyes,” providing “amazing capabilities” for data fusion on American ships. In an interview with The Drive, Rich Calabrese, Director of Surface Fleet Mission Systems at Lockheed Martin, revealed the specifics of using these aircraft in conjunction with the Naval Integrated Fire Control-Counter Air (NIFC-CA) system.

“In fact, the architecture is designed in such a way that we have created a component that can receive data that will come from the F-35, and provide them in a form that the weapons control system can use to defeat,” said the specialist, answering a question from the publication’s journalist Tyler Rogoway about the ability of destroyers or cruisers to hit targets that are not in the range of visibility of these ships.

In October 2020, Popular Mechanics magazine wrote that it is possible to detect the Russian hypersonic missile “Zircon” with the help of a carrier-based aircraft of long-range radar detection E-2D Hawkeye or a carrier-based fighter of the fifth-generation F-35B Lightning II, and targeting the missile with the aim of its subsequent destruction is carried out using the latest NIFC-CA system.
