Today, most of the world’s population is concerned about the spread of the coronavirus CoVID-19. This disease affects the lungs of a person and in some cases causes complications that lead to death. Since a vaccine against coronavirus has not yet been created, doctors save lives by connecting them to mechanical ventilation devices (IVL). But each such device costs from 500,000 to 3,000,000 rubles, so in many hospitals, they simply do not exist. But in the near future, the situation may change, because the founder of Tesla and SpaceX, Elon Musk, announced that he was ready to start the production of mechanical ventilation in his plants. Can a famous businessman save the world from a dangerous disease?
Elon Musk is unlikely to save the whole world alone, but he certainly can make a big contribution to the fight against coronavirus. Recently, on his twitter, the entrepreneur announced that in the event of a shortage of mechanical ventilation devices, his companies could start their production. A shortage of mechanical ventilation in the world is, and very large. For example, according to Meduza, in Moscow, their number is just over 5 thousand, but the city is buying new devices. New York Mayor Bill de Blasio has already approached Elon Musk for help, announcing that the US is experiencing an acute shortage of mechanical ventilation. According to his calculations, New York needs thousands of devices and the sooner they appear, the better.

But the company is unlikely to succeed in quickly launching the production of ventilation devices. The fact is that for this it is necessary to change the principles of the Tesla and SpaceX plants, and this takes some time. In addition, Elon Musk immediately warned that his companies would not be able to produce full-fledged mechanical ventilation devices. They will release their lightweight options that can only support the breathing of patients with mild to moderate illness. And the devices are unlikely to help people who are in critical condition.
Since Tesla and SpaceX had not previously engaged in the production of medical equipment, some users doubted that Elon Musk would be able to keep his promises. To this, the entrepreneur responded by saying that his companies produce cars and spacecraft with complex heating and ventilation systems. So with the production of simplified versions of ventilators, they should not have any special problems. But Elon Musk, recall, acknowledged that it might take some time to start production.
Criticism of Elon Musk
In general, Elon Musk is not particularly worried about the coronavirus. Earlier, he announced that worrying about coronavirus is stupid because panic can be more dangerous than the disease itself. However, because of such a harsh statement, he was subjected to great criticism. For example, CNN noted that Elon Musk does not have any official knowledge of medicine and virology. Therefore, he does not have the right to comment on such a dangerous situation in the world in this way. The author of the book “Black Swan” Nassim Taleb in response to a statement by Ilon Musk, announced that for many years people survived precisely because of the panic.
However, Elon Musk did not change his mind and even sent a letter to SpaceX employees in which he assured that they were more likely to die in a car accident than they would suffer from a coronavirus. But at the same time, he asked workers to stay home if they felt coronavirus symptoms such as shortness of breath, fever, and cough. At the time of writing, March 23, in the homeland of Tesla and SpaceX (California), more than 1,547 cases of coronavirus infection have been reported. The number of dead people is 28 people.
Coronavirus: Predictions from Elon Musk
Since Elon Musk is very calm about the pandemic, he believes that by the time the ventilator production starts, they will no longer be needed. According to him, by the end of April in the United States will not be a single case of coronavirus infection.
However, Elon Musk’s forecasts are not particularly trusted, because coronavirus is a serious problem for the whole world. To prevent infection and the spread of a dangerous disease, each of us needs to go out as rarely as possible, always wash our hands thoroughly and follow other WHO recommendations. When symptoms of coronavirus appear, you must call a doctor at home. Be healthy!
