The Senator suspected the social network of violating the sanctions regime.
Republican Senator Ted Cruz called on the US Treasury and Justice departments to investigate whether Twitter violated the law by allowing top Iranian officials to use its social network. Cruz demanded an investigation “for possible violations” of US sanctions against Iran by the company.
Cruz said Twitter might have violated the law by allowing Iran’s Supreme leader Ali Khamenei and Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif to publish tweets, despite their being on sanctions lists. International sanctions imposed by the United States prohibit individuals and legal entities from providing any kind of assistance, goods, and services to the list’s participants.
Cruz said that he first raised this issue in February-before the current conflict between Twitter and Trump’s presidential adviser began.
Twitter declined to comment on Senator Cruz’s actions.
