The man who stabbed four police officers in Paris on Thursday had a psychotic episode the day before: he talked incoherently and heard voices in his head, his wife said.
45-year-old Macael Arpon was shot dead by police at the scene. French authorities are trying to determine the cause of the attack.
Arpon’s wife has been temporarily detained, but prosecutors say she has not been charged.
Representatives of the Police Union saying that Arpon could be conflict in the workplace.
It is understood his wife also said he had disagreements with management and felt his work was underrated. Arpon was also 70% deaf.
The killings came a day after French police held a one-day strike to protest rising levels of violence against the guards. According to the police Union, more than 50 police officers have committed suicide since the beginning of this year (there were 35 suicides among French police officers in 2018).
According to the Home Secretary, Arpon was 45 years old and had worked for 16 years as a computer specialist in the police intelligence unit.
The Minister said that before the incident, Arpon’s behavior had not caused any alarm. He even seemed to be an ideal employee.
A year and a half ago, Arpon converted to Islam and, according to press reports, stopped talking to female colleagues. A government spokeswoman said he showed no signs of radicalization.
