A startup from the United States will print a 1232 horsepower race car. Almost all the details after analyzing the data array will print a 3D printer.
According to Czinger engineers, printing a sports car can take anywhere from 6 to 12 months. They explained that for a startup this is a “huge time”, so they had to calculate all the costs in advance. Researchers were able to start printing immediately after they adapted the device to their goal – the manufacture of structural parts.
“We start from scratch. Commercially available 3D printers and materials in our case do not work. The alloys are too fragile, they are not intended for our purposes, and in order to make the structure of the vehicle, it is necessary to reinvent the materials and create a special machine for printing them, ”the scientists explained.
German 3D printer maker SLM Solutions has helped develop a technology that can print all the details for a 1232 horsepower car. The patented software helps the company’s engineers calculate in advance what materials are needed to achieve the best results, and the printer prints everything after analyzing the data array.
Many components are printed from patented aluminum alloys. At the same time, some parts in the exhaust system are printed using Inconel 3D printing from a type of metal that can withstand extreme temperatures. They print several racks from titanium. 1% of car parts do not print, they are made manually of high strength metal and carbon fiber.
Lightweight is extremely important when developing such a high-performance car. It is powered by a gas-electric hybrid powertrain and a 2.9-liter twin-turbo V8 engine.
