Some symptoms persist even two months after coronavirus infection

Researchers from Italy found that some of the symptoms of coronavirus persist even 60 days after infection. In some patients, the sense of smell does not return or a cough persists.

A small study of patients who became infected with coronavirus showed that some of their symptoms persisted even after 60 days. The study confirms that symptoms may remain even after several tests for coronavirus have shown a negative result.

Patients treated in Rome were asked to participate in the study. 143 patients who had already received two negative tests for the presence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus agreed. The age of the group ranged from 19 to 85 years, the average age was 57 years. On average, they spent 13 days in the hospital, 20% needed an artificial respiration apparatus.

However, even after recovery, they had signs of fatigue, shortness of breath, pain in the joints, and chest. More than 10% coughed even two months after recovery, and 5% did not return their sense of smell. Other symptoms appeared singly.

At the same time, researchers note that for scientific conclusions they need to interview more people. In addition, some of the symptoms of COVID-19, such as a headache, are quite common and may not be related to the virus.
