Silver coin issued on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of Tom and Jerry

Many have heard about the phrase “cat and mouse”, and in our opinion there are no more famous cats and mice than the cult duo, Tom and Jerry.

In honor of the 80th anniversary of this legendary duo, the Perth Mint issued a new coin depicting these characters on January 3, 2020.

The coin is made from the Mint of the Perth Mint from 1 ounce of pure silver 99.99% and issued as legal tender under the leadership of the Government of Tuvalu. Perth Mint will issue no more than 2500 coins in honor of the 80th anniversary of Tom and Jerry in 2020, the weight of the coin will be one ounce.

The iconic rivals TOM and JERRY were created in 1940 by William Hannah and Joseph Barbera. Having first appeared in one cartoon Metro Goldwyn Mayer (MGM) “Puss Gets the Boot”, the cat-and-mouse duo was introduced with its current names in the subsequent 1941 short film “The Midnight Snack”.

In every cartoon, Tom gets in the way in his increasingly daring attempts to catch Jerry’s mouse. The popularity of the animation was such that by 1958, TOM and JERRY appeared in 114 short films directed by Hannah and Barbera and received seven Oscars. And this year a film will be released based on the banner of the confrontation between cat and mouse, the premiere is scheduled for December 23, 2020.

On the reverse side of the coin are classic images of Tom and Jerry in concentric rings that have repeatedly appeared in the cartoon. The design also includes the Tom and Jerry logo, the inscription “80 YEARS” and the traditional “P” mark of the Perth Mint. On the front side of the coin is an image of Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the date of 2020, weight and subtlety, as well as the monetary name.
