NASA introduced a sensor project that will help the all-terrain rover to work on the uneven surface of Venus. It will help the device work on the planet for several years, although the previous station was able to work there for only two hours.
Researchers from NASA noted that Venus is closer to Earth than Mars, but the planet’s surface is composed of ravines and holes, so all-terrain vehicles cannot work there. NASA and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) have launched a competition to develop mechanical sensors that will help the AREE all-terrain vehicle find and avoid bumps. Now the company has announced that they have a device that fits all requirements.
The Venus Feelers sensor uses three-wheeled front probes that help the all-terrain vehicle avoid large rocks, steep slopes, and pits. In this case, the device uses pendulums, rollers, levers, springs, and flexible shafts. It was designed by Egyptian architect and designer Youssef Gali.
NASA awarded honorary mentions to other projects that also attempted to solve the problem of exploring the surface of Venus using unique ideas. In total, the agency received 572 applications from 82 countries, the best of them will be considered for inclusion in the device of an all-terrain vehicle, the development of which is ongoing.
NASA’s goal is to create a device that will work for several years at temperatures above 1562 ° C and a pressure 92 times higher than on Earth. This is a huge amount of time, given that the Soviet device “Venus-13” was able to work on the planet in just 127 minutes.
