Rolls-Royce has unveiled a new generation of the Ghost sedan. The car will replace the 2009 model – by the way, the most successful model in the history of the British brand.
The company started developing the second generation sedan more than 6 years ago. And although outwardly the new Ghost is not far from the image of its predecessor, in Rolls-Royce they talk about a new design philosophy, which they termed “post-abundance” – that is, the desire for minimalism and restraint. The firm has collected a large array of data on the interests, opinions, and changing tastes of Ghost customers and their understanding of luxury – clients, as the company emphasizes, chose to abandon the abundance of complex details and overly flashy jewelry.
In technical terms, the new Ghost is close to the flagship Phantom sedan and the Cullinan crossover – the sedan received the same aluminum architecture, but it also did not do without the original “chips”. In particular, this is a new chassis system, designated Planar and consisting of three main elements. This is a damper with an upper wishbone that is installed above the front suspension (provides, according to the British, an “even more stable and light ride”), a Flagbearer complex that adapts the suspension to changes in the road surface, and a satellite communication system using GPS data to select optimal transmission before cornering.
The 6.75-liter turbo V12 has been upgraded and develops 571 hp. from. and 850 Nm of torque – however, the increase in power compared to its predecessor is ridiculous (+1 hp). But in addition to the 8-speed “automatic” in the transmission, the new Ghost received a four-wheel drive, as well as a fully-controlled chassis with a steering rear axle. A sedan with a curb weight of 2.55 tons accelerates up to 100 km / h in 4.8 seconds, the maximum speed is 250 km/h.
In length, the new Ghost has grown by almost 90 mm (up to 5546 mm), the sedan also added a little in width, but retained the same wheelbase (3295 mm). The developers are especially proud of the soundproofing of the cabin – a double-layer partition is installed inside the body, and special cavities in the roof, trunk, and floor are filled with more than 100 kg of sound-absorbing materials. In addition, glass units with a transparent composite center sheet were used, and the tires were fitted with a four-inch layer of lightweight sound-absorbing foam.
Rolls-Royce has already begun accepting orders for the new Ghost, the cost is still known for the American market – from 332,500 dollars.
