Researchers from the University of Zurich will grow artificial human organs on the ISS.

Experiment “3D Organoids in Spacewill take place on the ISS: equipment and materials will be delivered to the station during the next resupply mission.

Organoids are permanent parts of the cell that perform specific functions. On artificial three-dimensional organelles, toxicological studies can be carried out, this will exclude experiments on animals. Also organelles can replace tissue fragments in the treatment of damaged organs.

Three-dimensional organelles cannot be grown on Earth without some kind of supporting framework. In space, where there is no gravity, this problem is solved by itself.

On the next mission, tissue stem cells from two women and two men of different ages will be sent into orbit. The researchers will test how reliable their method is when using cells with different biological variability.

Scientists also plan that in the future the ISS will have a workshop for the production of human tissues that can be used on Earth for scientific purposes and in medicine.

Now the organizers of the experiment are faced with the main question – how long can organelles be stored after transportation and in what form it is optimal to do it.
