Infection with the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus can cause sudden and irreversible hearing loss, according to Medicalexpress.
British scientists described the medical history of a 45-year-old man who was hospitalized with symptoms of COVID-19, and ten days later was transferred to the intensive care unit on artificial ventilation. A month later the patient developed other complications, after which he was treated with redelivering, steroids, and blood transfusions.
After being transferred from the intensive care unit, the man heard a ringing in his left ear, and after a while completely lost his hearing. Doctors have ruled out other possible causes of the condition, including rheumatoid arthritis, flu, and HIV, and concluded that it is caused by COVID-19.
Experts stressed that this is the first time they have encountered a case of complete hearing loss after suffering a coronavirus in the UK. In the scientific literature, they found only four references to this complication.
