Russia will do a “good job” if it protects the Kurds from Turkey, Trump said

WASHINGTON – US President Donald Trump spoke positively about Russia’s plans to help prevent clashes between the Turkish army and Kurdish forces in Northern Syria.

“If Russia will help protect the Kurds, it is a good thing, not a bad thing. This process will lead Syria,” said Trump at a press conference with the President of Italy Sergio Mattarello.

He added that he understood Syria’s objections to “Turkey taking its land,” but stressed that the US should have nothing to do with it.

Since 2015, Russia has been conducting an operation against terrorists in Syria at the request of the country’s authorities. Also, the Russian military and military police officers provide humanitarian assistance, conduct demining and assist in the reconciliation of the parties to the civil conflict. Currently, Russian soldiers are patrolling areas in Northern Syria to prevent clashes between parts of the Turkish army and Kurdish formations.

On October 9, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan announced the launch of operation Source of peace in Northern Syria, aimed at the Kurdistan Workers Party and the terrorist group “Islamic state.” Turkish aircraft on the same day struck the city of Ras al-Ain and some other Syrian cities on the border of the two countries. The ground part of the operation was later announced. On Saturday, the Turkish defense ministry said that the Turkish military and the Syrian armed opposition had taken control of Ras al-Ain.
