A Russian company brought a coronavirus strain from the United States for research and development of a vaccine. The virus particles were declared at the Tomsk customs. This is reported on the website of the Siberian customs administration. The company name was not disclosed.
The virus particles placed in the vial weighed 88 grams. They were delivered in a special cooling container.
The report notes that customs inspectors released the goods in less than an hour, although it usually takes about one working day.
This is the second case of viral particles being transported through Tomsk customs. Before that, they were declared on January 30.
On April 4, the Vector center in Novosibirsk announced that it is ready to start the first phase of clinical trials of vaccines against coronavirus infection in May. Later it became known that the list of 60 volunteers has already been formed. Among them was also the chief developer of the drug Ilnaz Gimatdinov.
The day before, the head of the World Health Organization (WHO) Tedros Gebreyesus said that it is possible to stop the spread of coronavirus infection in the world only if there is an effective vaccine. The development of the vaccine is necessary because of the risk of reactivation of COVID-19, he added.
Work on a vaccine against coronavirus infection is underway in many countries. However, due to the length of the process, which involves the synthesis of the drug itself and thorough clinical trials, the vaccine may not appear for at least a year.
