Russia and the US discussed what is happening in Venezuela

On May 1, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US Secretary of state Michael Pompeo had a telephone conversation on the American initiative, the press service of the Russian Foreign Ministry reports. The focus was on the situation in Venezuela.

“On the Russian side, it was stressed that Washington’s interference in the Internal Affairs of a sovereign state, threats to its leadership — a gross violation of international law. It is indicated that the continuation of aggressive steps is fraught with the most serious consequences. Only the Venezuelan people have the right to determine their own destiny, for which the dialogue of all the political forces of the country, to which the government has long called for, is in demand. Destructive external influence, especially force, has nothing to do with the democratic process,” the Russian Foreign Ministry reports.

During the conversation, the humanitarian aspects of the situation in Syria, in particular, the situation in the camps of displaced persons “Rukban” and “Al-Haul” were also discussed.

Earlier, Michael Pompeo said in an interview with Fox Business that the United States can initiate a military operation in Venezuela if the need arises. At the same time, Washington is counting on a “peaceful transition of power, in which Venezuelan President Nicholas Maduro leaves and new elections are held.”
