Republican Congressman urges Biden to boycott 2022 Beijing Olympics

The actions taken by the Chinese Communist Party are contrary to the values of both the United States and its allies worldwide, said John Katko.

Member of the House of Representatives John Katko (from New York) called on US President Joe Biden to boycott the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing because of the actions of the Chinese authorities against the Uighurs. The corresponding letter was sent to the head of the White House.

“The actions taken by the Chinese Communist Party are contrary to the values of both the United States and its allies worldwide. Participation in the Olympic Games, held in a country that openly commits genocide, not only undermines these common values but also casts a shadow on the promises made to all those who strive for a free and fair society,”

the message says.

Katko called the Biden administration to take measures to ensure that, in conjunction with U.S. allies to achieve the transfer Games from China “in a country that really lives in accordance with the values of the Olympic Charter.” Copies of the letter were sent to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Assistant to the US President for National Security, Jake Sullivan, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and Secretary of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas.

On January 16, the opposition Conservative Party of Canada demanded that the ruling Liberal Party put pressure on the IOC to postpone the Beijing Games, which are scheduled to take place from February 4 to 20, 2022, in connection with the alleged genocide of the Uighurs, as well as because of the detention of Canadian citizens by the Chinese authorities.
