During a telephone conversation between the presidents of the Russian Federation and the United States, which took place on Tuesday, April 13, Biden suggested that Putin hold a meeting in a third country in the coming months to discuss the full range of issues facing the United States and Russia.
Alexey Pushkov recalled that in the history of relations between Russia and the United States, there had been both successful meetings and “frankly failed summits.” To the second group, he attributed the meeting of Khrushchev and Kennedy in Vienna in April 1961.
“The stumbling blocks were then Cuba and Berlin. No common language was found. Khrushchev was annoyed with Kennedy, and he was extremely dissatisfied with Khrushchev,” the senator wrote in the Telegram channel.
At the same time, the senator stressed that there was no negative attitude between the then leaders, which Biden now expresses to Putin.
“It is impossible to exclude that at the future summit, if it takes place, Biden will try in the spirit of the “new rigidity” he declared to lecture Putin, to express to him his sum of claims and to talk from a position of strength. Biden’s notes are already slipping through. Nothing will come of this: Putin will not give in to pressure,” Pushkov is convinced.
The senator expressed the opinion that in this scenario, the summit will obviously be a failure. In this regard, Pushkov recommended that Biden ” understand very well why he is inviting Putin to the meeting and what he can offer him.”
