Pompeo: Washington will respond to Navalny’s poisoning as soon as all the facts are known

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo commented on Washington’s position on the poisoning of Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny in an interview with German TV channel Bild.

According to Pompeo, “the United States has made it clear that the use of chemical weapons in this way is unacceptable.”

“We have made clear our expectations that Russia will allow an investigation that will ultimately allow us to determine how Mr. Navalny was poisoned,” the Secretary of State said, noting that it is necessary to wait for the results of the OPCW verification, which should arrive this week or next.

The Secretary of State also recalled that Washington reacted harshly to using chemical weapons in the attempted murder of former double agent Sergei Skripal. “There is no reason to expect that when all the facts become known, the United States will not respond properly,” Pompeo said.

He also added that the United States had indicated its position on the “Nord stream-2” project.

“The United States believes that the “Nord stream-2″ gas pipeline provides financial support to Russia, creates a risk for Europe, allowing it to become dependent on the gas coming from Russia, and also threatens Ukraine, which, as I know, profoundly worries many in Germany,” Pompeo said. – Therefore, we hope that the “Nord stream-2″ gas pipeline will not be completed. We are working to create a coalition that will prevent this. We hope that the German government will come to the same position, whether because of what happened to Mr. Navalny or because of the real security consequences that dependence on Russian gas entails.”
