Washington calls on all sides to “defend democracy in the coming weeks.”
WASHINGTON – The United States looks forward to working with acting Bolivian President Jeanine Anez and welcomes her decision to take over as head of state. This is stated in a statement issued by the State Department, US Secretary of state Michael Pompeo.
“The United States welcomes the decision of Bolivian Senator Jeanine Agnes to become interim president and to lead her country in this democratic transition, in accordance with the Bolivian Constitution and the principles of the inter-American Democratic Charter. We look forward to working with the Organization of American States, Bolivia’s civil constitutional institutions and the Bolivian people to prepare for free and fair elections as soon as possible,” Pompeo said.
“We call on all parties to defend democracy in the coming weeks and to refrain from violent actions against fellow citizens and their property,” Pompeo concluded.
