Russia and the United States can successfully work together in some areas, including the fight against the coronavirus pandemic and terrorism, despite continuing contradictions, US Secretary of state Mike Pompeo said in an interview with the Washington Examiner.
“There are areas where our two countries can work together,” he said, citing cooperation in the fight against the pandemic and terrorism as an example.
“We are happy that we can try to help them fight this virus… When the President (Donald Trump) spoke on the phone with President (Vladimir) Putin, about a week ago, maybe a little more, the President decided to give them serious help. Some testing equipment, as well as a ventilator. This equipment is on the way,” Pompeo said.
He also recalled the successful work with the Russian Federation in the fight against terrorism.
“I have been working with Russia since I was Director of the CIA. I worked closely with them to prevent terrorist attacks. They helped us saved American lives by providing us with information. We helped them prevent a terrorist attack that was planned in St. Petersburg,” he said.
At the same time, he recalled the continuing contradictions between the two countries. “And when we interact with the Russians on these issues, we clarify our expectations,” he concluded.
