Pompeo accused Russia of violating arms treaties

US Secretary of state Mike Pompeo said that the US would not remain in the arms treaties if the Russian Federation violates them.

Earlier, the US withdrew from the Treaty on the elimination of intermediate-range and shorter-range missiles and announced its intention to withdraw from the open skies Treaty. However, the US and Russia still have the basic start-3 Treaty on strategic offensive arms reduction.

“Russia is the only one responsible for these events and the continuing erosion of the arms control architecture. We remain committed to effective arms control that promotes the security of the United States, allies, and partners, is correct and implementable and includes partners who approach their responsibilities responsibly,” Pompeo said in a statement.

“But we cannot remain in arms control agreements that the other side violates and that are actively used not to support but to undermine international peace and security,” Pompeo said.
Russia has, in the past, denied US accusations of violating international treaties.
