Former Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has been arrested. The former general director of the Catalans, Oscar Grau, was also arrested, and Roman Gomez Ponti, who was responsible for the club’s legal operations.
The detentions of the functionaries are connected with the searches that take place in the main office of the Catalans on March 1. The club’s former management is accused of setting up a company in February 2020 to slander people who criticize Bartomeu. The list of victims also includes the defender Gerard Pique and Lionel Messi of FC Barcelona striker.
The 58-year-old Bartomeu denied any involvement in the case.
Recall that the functionary left the post of president of Barcelona in October last year. The election of the new president is scheduled for March 7.
