Picture-in-Picture on iPhone now available to YouTube premium subscribers

In June, video hosting YouTube announced that it was going to bring picture-in-picture functionality to iOS. Now, it looks like the long-awaited feature is finally available, albeit perhaps only for a limited time and only for YouTube Premium subscribers. Here’s how to activate it.

If you are a YouTube Premium subscriber, open your web browser and go to www.youtube.com/new. Scroll down to Picture-in-picture on iOS and click Try it out. You will be prompted to sign in to your account.

Then, while watching a YouTube video, simply navigate away from the app using the Home button or swipe up, and picture-in-picture will launch automatically. If you lock the phone screen while watching, the video is paused, but you can resume it using the media controls on the lock screen.

YouTube says the feature is “available until October 31st” and there is no understanding of what will happen after that date. Free News hopes that this is when YouTube – as promised in June – will bring this feature to all users, not just paid ones.
