Pet owners tolerate coronavirus more easily

Now that quarantine has been introduced almost universally because of coronavirus, dog owners are in a better position – they can officially go outside for a short while. But the benefit of dogs is not only that. Scientists from the Italian city of Catanzaro in the course of the study found: those who have a four-legged pet, COVID19 carry easier. A similar effect was observed in those in contact with cattle.

To find an explanation for this phenomenon, the researchers compared viruses. It turned out that the disease of bulls, cows and other cattle is similar to Chinese coronavirus by 38.4%, and the virus of dogs by 36.9%. This means that owners of SARS-Cov-2 already have some kind of immunity.

This was also reported by Sabina Olex-Condor, a Polish doctor who works in a clinic in Madrid. The doctor believes that owners of cats and dogs, as a rule, tolerate coronavirus easier or completely asymptomatic.

“This issue needs further study, but there is speculation that we can deal with higher immunity due to contact with pet-specific coronaviruses and a more efficient immune system”, notes Olex-Condor.

Perhaps this is due to the fact that in a cross-reaction antibodies are produced to the virus, and owners (most often) of cats are more protected from COVID19. Olex-Condor built her findings by analyzing observations of 100 patients with coronavirus.

“Cats are known to have a form of feline coronavirus that does not infect humans. Therefore, it is possible that people who have close daily contact with a carrier cat may have antibodies to the feline virus. And these antibodies can also destroy the human virus. This is called a cross-reaction and exists in nature. Of course, in order to confirm my assumptions, in-depth studies and statistics will be required”, the doctor notes.

The immunity of pet owners may already be “seasoned” in the fight against microorganisms contained in the saliva and hair of animals, which is why the disease is easier to tolerate.
