O’Brien accused China of trying to steal research on the COVID-19 vaccine

The White House adviser said this in a speech to the British and American military.

President Donald Trump’s national security adviser, Robert O’Brien, accused China of trying to steal research on the COVID-19 vaccine from the West.

He called China a malicious rival seeking to monopolize all important industries of the 21st century.

In a 20-minute speech to senior British and American military officials, O’Brien sharply criticized China, saying it is a predatory power that oppresses its people and seeks to coerce both neighbors and Western powers.

“The Chinese Communist Party seeks to dominate all spheres and sectors and plans to monopolize all industries of great importance in the 21st century,” O’Brien told the Atlantic future forum, speaking via video link with the British aircraft carrier Queen Elizabeth.

“More recently, China has used cyber espionage against companies developing COVID vaccines and treatments in Europe, the UK and the US, while simultaneously talking about the need for international cooperation,” O’Brien said.

According to the White House adviser, the West has made concessions to China for decades, including WTO membership, believing that it would open up economically and politically while easing foreign companies’ barriers.

“Unfortunately, these promises are still not being fulfilled,” the adviser said. “Instead, the leaders have reinforced a totalitarian approach and a mercantilist economy dominated by the state.”
