Obama partially canceled the celebration of his anniversary due to the deterioration of the situation with COVID-19

The party at the mansion of the former US president on the island of Martha’s Vineyard was planned to be attended by hundreds of former officials from the administration and celebrities. Still, the circle of guests was reduced to family members and close friends of the politician, NYT writes.

Former US President Barack Obama partially canceled the celebrations of his 60th birthday scheduled for Saturday with the participation of hundreds of guests. This was reported by The New York Times on Wednesday.

According to her, hundreds of former administration officials and celebrities planned to attend the party at the Obama mansion on the island of Martha’s Vineyard. Many guests were already on their way; others were planning to pass the necessary tests for coronavirus to get to the territory of the residence of the former American leader. It was expected that actor George Clooney, film director Steven Spielberg, and American TV presenter Oprah Winfrey would also come to the holiday. The current US president, Joe Biden, who served as vice president in the Obama administration, in turn, said that he would refrain from participating in events.

According to Obama’s press secretary Hannah Hankins, the decision to reduce the scale of the event to a narrow circle, which includes only family members and close friends of the ex-leader, was made “in connection with the spread of a new delta strain.”
