Rogozin said this at the International Conference on Space Exploration GLEX-2021. According to a contract previously published on the public procurement website, the development of a preliminary design for the tug will be completed by July 2024 and will cost 4.2 billion rubles.
He added that the development of elements of a nuclear tug based on a transport and energy module with a megawatt-class nuclear power plant has been under way in the country since 2010.
Earlier it became known about plans to launch a nuclear tug into space by 2030 for flight tests. After that, it is planned to start its serial production and commercial use.
It was reported that the nuclear tug will be designed for flights to the Moon and the planets of the solar system. It received the name “Zeus”, and the research and development work itself is called “Nuclon”.
