Scientists in the United States have unveiled a new 3D printing method that will make objects stronger and cheaper. Now you can even print parts for aircraft or cars.
Researchers have created durable dentures and medical devices for patients, as well as durable parts for aircraft and cars. They managed to do this using a new 3D printing technology presented by scientists from UMass Lowell University.
Printing traditionally uses plastic, metal, and wax. Products created by 3D printing plastics include everything from toys to drones. However, there are several problems with such printing at once – they cannot maintain strength and accurately reflect the desired shape. To change this, the researchers introduced “injection printing”. It is described in the scientific journal Additive Manufacturing.
The method combines elements of 3D printing and injection molding, a technique by which objects are created by filling mold cavities with molten materials. The combination of these two processes increases the productivity of 3D printing while increasing the strength and properties of the resulting products. Objects print three times faster.
“Our method significantly improves the quality of parts – they become denser, with fewer cracks and voids. This completely changes the scope of new parts. At the same time, the method is economically beneficial – it can be used in existing printers and with conventional programs, ”the researchers noted. They developed the technology for about 18 months.
