Special cartridges and unique, non-toxic sorbents will help control the quality of drinking water in places where there is a risk of high arsenic content.
Scientists at the Siberian Federal University (SFU) have created a new simple method for monitoring water quality, which can easily detect two forms of arsenic (III and V).
The advantage of the new test is that it does not require sample preparation using acids, toxic solvents and high temperatures. You only need two cartridges filled with sorbents (absorbers), which were developed in the laboratory of the Siberian Federal University. The creation of these substances was a key step in the research.
The uniqueness of the new sorbents lies in the simplicity of their synthesis. To obtain them, only aqueous solutions are needed using available reagents: cheap, widespread, non-toxic. The technology does not use substances such as toluene, acetonitrile, carbon disulfide, siloxanes and other raw materials used in chemical surface modification.

The authors created sorbents using a layer-by-layer method of applying organic reagents to inorganic oxides: for this, they took common inorganic oxides, and applied two successive layers to their surface.
As the experts explained, polyamines have a positive charge. Such sorbents efficiently extract negatively charged forms, which include arsenic (V), from aqueous solutions.
The result is a sorbent. which is a unique basis for creating a wide class of sorbents with desired properties.
